Simon Stålenhag

The paintings of Simon Stålenhag are strange retrofuturistic snapshots into an imaginary world. Often, the hi-tek machines, are dead and rosty and industry from our age still works. As if he would say, don't rush into the future, things can get complicated, but I admit, it's too speculative. I've got from the paintings a very raw feeling as being in a desert.

He's a Swede, on the paintings are also cars. Saab as well. I found three of them, there are maybe more.

Just checkout simonstalehag.se, there are beautiful pieces.

The Maksimatic Cup Holder

Maksimatic are trying to improve an important part of the interior - the cup holder. I love this idea. The product is in the prototype phase and the inventors are trying to get funds by the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo.

The artwork

It doesn't matter, that this is not the complete Saab line. It's amazing anyway.

And... Black Saab Rulez!

A parking lot...

This was a more or less typical parking lot in Czechoslovakia through the socialist time. It's most probable, that the photo was taken in the 70-ies.

So what we have here:

The Saab 99 is clear.

The busses are all Skoda RTO. The engine was in the cabin, next to the driver (below the clock). I remember them as a child, from ski trips into the Tatras. They also were busses for public transport in the cities, but slowly dissapeared through the 80ies. Here is a nice RTO gallery

On the left to the Saab is VAZ-2101 Zhiguli, at that time a level below the Saab, but expensive as well. Engine 1.3 liter, performance about 70 hp. We never called it VAZ, it was simply a Zhiguli. It was some Fiat license to Russia or a copy.

On the left to him is Trabant 601 (the combi one). Engine 0.6 liter, about 23-25 horsepower. Dual stroke. There was a Special Mix petrol on the gas stations. When it wasn't, you had to buy a bottle of oil and empty it out into the tank. We had two after each other. Interesting experience. You learn to honour normal cars afterwards:)

To the right side of the Saab is Fiat 850. Engine 0.850 liter with about 50 hp.

In the left lower corner are two Skoda 1000 MB. Actually these were very good looking cars, rear engined and having a rear wheel drive. They rusted a lot. The MB means Mlada Boleslav, the town where they were built. They are still seen on the street from time to time. I am regulary going crazy after the convertible version. It's a masterpiece.

On the left side below the busses are a couple of Skoda 100. It was the successor of Skoda 1000 MB. It was a nice one, but not that popular as the 1000. There is also a Skoda Octavia, the model from the 60ies.

A bit of nostalgia here, but to be honest if the regime would come back, I would flee immediately. Therefore I deeply respect my parents, which stayed. For many reasons.

Blue & yellow

That blue - yellow color combination rocks. And besides the swedish national flag color reference, the Saab is also nicely painted. Not too much patterns, but visible. And the Viggen wheels. And a bit of retro feeling.

It somehow makes my Saab heart beating faster.

Baby on board

A nice sticker for baby on board isn't easy to find. At least here, there are always some kind of advertisements connected to it. Skoda logos and so on. I would consider Saab, but I've chosen the one on the picture above.

And yes, it's my first one, she's Alexandra and was born yesterday evening. Everybody is healthy and happy.

These stickers are prepared for both my Volvos as well as for the Saab convertible. I've found this one on openclipart, the printing service just used them as they are posted.

So I will be quiet for a while.

The web talk with Victor Muller

Jalopnik held recently an interview with Victor Muller, the owner of Spyker Cars and ex-owner of Saab. It was a web talk, where the readers could ask questions.

The debate was mostly about Spyker, but also partially about Saab. An informative and also very inspiring talk.

Two things stayed in my mind:

Q: "Ever think about having another go with SAAB?"
VM: "Every day."

Q: "What has been your most important personal/business lessons from your time at SAAB and Spyker?"
VM: "Nulla tenaci invia est via (for the tenacious, no road is impassable). The next part is easy."  (the latin part is  Spykers motto)

Wagonized drawings

Cabotine, © Wagonized

By coincidence I've landed on the very cute Wagonized blog. The car paintings part is simply lovely and it contains a couple of Saabs as well. Such as Jeffs Cabotine above (I drove it for some minutes!:) ) or this red Saab 900 below.

Saab 900, © Wagonized

There are much more of these cute wagons, such as Citroen DS, Fiat Multipla (my grandparents had one, now it would be the coolest car on the road), BMW 2002, Lada Niva or Trabant.

Well and two other Saabs as well - a blue(s) ninetynine and a yellow ninetynine.

I love and respect these small hobby thingies such as these drawings.

Album cover: Tweez by Slint

This is the cover of the album Tweez issued by the band Slint in 1989. Someone told me, that it was mentioned somewhere, that to the band the album sounded like Saab, so they used a Saab as the cover page.

The band wasn't by far a one release show, the members appeared in a number of bands, some of them known, Zwan (Billy Corgan), The Breeders (4AD in the strong phase) or Interpol. The sound sounds familiar from that time (early RHCP, Dif Juz, King Crimson 80's time etc).

If your are interested in how a Saab sounded to "not so conventional" rockers back in time, here is the whole album:

Coffee mugs

It's amazing how people are sticking to logos. So many people are unconsciously collecting things with logos on it. When you think about it, it's absurd, but disregard of that, people are doing it.

These are my mugs with logos:) Handmade, only a couple of them, made with love by a Saab fan, which owns a small ceramic workshop - Keramika Kovi. Ideal for a morning coffee.

Absurd but ideal.

For personal reasons

"For personal reasons", says the slogan on this Saab jacket and it is saying a lot about the strange Saab hobby. I'm very proud to own it. It took a while, because I've never could get my size (XL).

But the organisers of Roudnice gathering this year remembered me and saved a jacket and t-shirt for me. Thank you ladies, respect! The slogan is in czech language.

Saab 99 Turbo: large article in local Veteran magazine

This is the march 2014 edition of the slovakian Veteran magazine. A guy from the local Saab community wrote an 8-page long Saab 99 Turbo article. A really interesting one. I apologise for not having time to translate it, so this is rather a post for Slovak and Czech readers and whoever understand the slovak language.

The first longer roofless ride in 2014

In contrast to the north America and Canada, the winter here, in the middle of Europe, didn't existed. So I hope, at least the spring will be nice. It seems, that it started today. The 188 km without the roof through the country roads of middle Slovakia were really refreshing. I needed that. Urgently.

Time machine

I have nearly zero time to update my loved Saab blog. Many things and several fundamental changes are going on here. Most of them are positive, but they demand time and energy. So my apologise for not updating as often as before. Still here. Alive and kickin'
