The long awaited vacation is finally coming. There is a long overdue and urgent need for a week to bring the work and life into the right balance again. Together with a wish for refreshing my yachting skills, next weeks expectations are set. I'll spend it with a couple of friends on a charter yacht in Croatia.
My Saab will have a break for the week. Six people and two cars. To pack three adults for a week in a convertible is possible, but far from to be comfortable for an eight hour drive. A combi fits much better, so my company XC70 has to do the trip. I will miss my Saab.
This will be our Hanse 470, for me the longest boat ever rented. Also it should be a very good quality and well equipped boat. Let's see. A fair price in the late season made it attractive.
Marine weather forecasts as well as the standard ones are saying the same - a start with rain showers and later great conditions. The satellite images are showing the closest weather front 400 km to the north. In Croatia it sometimes happens, that the rain is at the land only while on the sea rules a great weather. The reason are the mountains along the coast. We've seen it in the past and I hope it will be the case again. It creates beautiful sunsets.
Wishful thinking, yes ... even while being rather relaxed yachting gurus, the plan B for more windy conditions is to make a ride with the boat. To go pretty straight against the wind and make the water sparkle. Our journey will start close to Split, heading southeast around probably the nicest and magic island of Hvar, continue south to the island Vis and back. To stay overnight on anchor away from crowded places until the water supply holds is the plan. Everything with a big respect to the sea.
There will be quiet on Saabism for a while. Most probably ...

A small update
There are things going on in the Saab survival drama. But drilling repeatedly in the news and guessing the developments makes less and less the sense to me. Anyway nobody will shout the reality on the web before it actually happens.
So in the meantime I've tried to improve the look of Saabism. An attempt to achieve a more clean look. It goes slowly and is a challenge for my coding skills from the stone age of the internet.
But it's also fun, when the result is as intended. So I'd like to point your attention to the two customised buttons - the search and the language selector, both in the upper right corner of the page. Such small changes will appear in the future.
Also, the blog should load a bit quicker. Some of the pictures were stored in Dropbox, which is a great and very handy cloud service, but for different use. They are now stored in a more appropriate place.
August is coming to the end, right now here are very delightful evenings ideal for a short cabrio drive. Or a walk around the city as recently. Despite of many strange things I like my home city Bratislava, especially places around the Danube river a lot.

Stone in the windshield
To get a stone into the windshield is a pain. Especially when the hole is large and cannot be repaired. Insurance, service etc etc. This happened to a friend with Saab on the german autobahn. Nice gift when you go on vacation with your girlfriend and this happens right at the start.
The good part of it is, that the windshield is robust enough and the hole didn't "worked", didn't broadened itself. Not even a milimeter. It's on Saab 9-3 Convertible Aero MY2006.
Another good part of it is, that he had his GoPro camera running and filmed it. To see it in slow-motion is a rare thing.
To see, where the stone hitted the windshield, look at lower part of the glass, right above the dashboard. There are two arrows marking the place.

Griffin Models Configurator
Andrei, the author of Griffin Models mentioned it recently. If you can configure cars through a configurator, why you can't do it with models ? Saab models of course.
Exactly this is under development right now - the Griffin Models configurator.
In a couple of days, at 1st of September should be at least first two body types available. Seeing the models in Spa recently, it is a very nice detailed work of an enthusiast driving Saab.
I'm looking forward to be able to configure my jet black convertible, because a black one is nowhere to get.

Black matte Saab ?
Everybody has seen it on the street. Mostly on eye-catching cars. Many, who think about the car seriously, were considering it. Most said no.
Including myself, but sometimes it drills it me, how my Saab 9-3 would look like with a matte black foil. There are a few, real as well as virtual.
Here are some, make your opinion by yourself :
A black matte Saab 9-3 SC.

A black matte Saab 9-3 SportSedan. Very nice work, it has a carbon hood. I love the wheels.
Source and more photos : you!photography [scroll a bit down].
The known 9-3 SRT10 Megapower with Viper V10 engine, with 600 HP and 720 NM of torque.
This is awesome and the matte finish makes completely sense.

And a virtual one :
Details by side, it's too much. Author admits attention ****ing, so he knows what he's doing.

I will stick with my jet black paint as it is. Rather looking for a skilled workman, who could mask the scratches from stones. Not easy to find here.
As said, make an opinion by yourself. The comments section is open.

SaabsUnited Octoberfest 2012 confirmed
SaabsUnited confirmed the Octoberfest event for this year. It will be on Saturday 13th of October in Trollhattan, Sweden.
ANA, The Saab Car Museum, MapTun and Realcar are the partners of the event, there will come more for sure, Neobrothers and RBM Performance are in plan.
I've been there last year and recommend it to anyone interested in Saabs, having time and some money for this. Nice cars, really good atmosphere and good program. The program for this year is not announced yet, but it will be again very interesting.
Some taste from last year :)
Unfortunately circumstances doesn't allow me to attend, apart how much I'd love to at least fly over, not mentioning about driving there :(
Enjoy all who are going to Octoberfest this year.

Wheels of IntSaab 2012
The choice of another set of wheels for my Saab is constantly running around in my mind. Before IntSaab, there was a large dose of conservativism in it, means genuine Saab wheels only. IntSaab 2012 changed that. Despite of the event itself had as usual much bigger accent on classic Saabs, the newer car owners were much more liberal in wheels choice against from what I've seen before. Well, individualism and Saab are good fitting together.
My current rims are 17" Aero ALU74 5-spoke split (12771524). It seems they are also quite rare.
The new wheel choice is to handle with the highest level of cautiousness to not to destroy the look. So it will take some time to mature before the order. So currently I'm drilling through pictures and forums, when the time allows it. Maybe I will end at genuine Saab wheels again, i don't know.
Below is a collection of 86 wheels from IntSaab 2012. Click on the picture to see full resolution [2000 x 1320 px].

Historic truck meeting
Imagine you're at a parking spot somewhere in Belgium and from one minute to another beautiful historical trucks starting to appear. 40 years old machines, fully operational and clean like a mirror. Just by coincidence.
Exactly this happened to a friend, coming with his girlfriend from IntSaab 2012. Camera was ready, so besides his IntSaab pictures here is a couple of beautiful pics from that meeting.
Some of the cars have a badge saying Panoramatoer 2012, so I've tried to google that meeting but without success. It doesn't matter too much, but if you know, what that was, it would be nice to post a link in the comments.

Memories on the Spa Francorchamps circuit
Got some pictures for playing around. My Saab on the circuit. A bit selfish, yes. But how many times in life will I get this opportunity again ?
So a collage of the pics. An attempt to imitate the wonderful split screen sequences from the 60's and 70's movies like Bullit or The Thomas Crown Affair.

Luxury cars ...
This thing is not a good Saab thing as the subheadline of my blog says. It's a bad car thing, unfortunately. The registration fee for cars is slowly crawling around and the course is towards my home country Slovakia.
The benchmark on which the registration fee will depend is engine performance. Not CO2 emissions, weight and /or age, origin or fuel type of the car. Let's see, what is coming :
This is a pure taxation of luxury called owning a vehicle. It mirrors the thinking of the society. Consider this : the current average wage is just below 800 €. More than a half of the employees earn less. A paycheck on 1000 € and more is seen by 18% citizens. Therefore to earn a vehicle is widely considered as luxury.
I just wonder, why so many cars are on the streets ?
It's not about owning a musculative supersport, large SUV or a convertible. It's about the average man. A common reaction when a car is needed, (young family, small shop owner), is to buy a used car. Not anymore, these fees are applied to used cars as well and it is about first registration in the country.
So for them a used Skoda Octavia (leading brand here) or VW Golf 1.4TSI will cost 217 € more. If you want a diesel from them, you have to stay on the 1.6 TDI. It doesn't matter if new or used.
In a Saab case, the weakest petrol Saab, the 1.8i with 122 HP would require 217 €. Same for diesel 1.9TiD. The twin turbo TTiD with 179 HP would cost me a bit shocking 787 € on registration fee. My used Saab would cost me 2047 € more. Ooops...
The consequences :
Lower car sales and increasing age of the cars. Milking the middle-class (not only through this fee) will cause less expenditures and waiting for the storm fades out. Does it helps the economy ? No way.
Increase of vehicles with foreign numberplates. People will search possibilities to register the vehicles in neighbouring countries, mainly Czech republic. Simillar example was when our hungarian neighbours registered cars in Slovakia, because of the price.
Support of local used car stores. It'is a common practice here to cheat the odometers and making cars "younger". So many scraps with good looking driven kilometers are appearing. They are cheaper to buy as import it. More expensive to maintain, dangerous to drive.
The most sad thing is, that in developed countries you get a counter value for your taxes. The level of state services - healthcare, retired pay, road system, creating job opportunities etc. Not so here. The majority of the collected money will disappear in private pockets.
This is only one of at least four of such a brilliant ideas coming here. It's about time to think about a defense strategy.

Saab 900 Classic Convertible study from 1983
Top Gear once covered an interesting study of Saab 900 Classic Convertible from the Frankfurt Motor in 1983. It appeared recently on the net.
The study shows a different soft-top and a rear window which could be opened separately.
The video starts exact where it should, at the Saab 900 part.

Sleepy on the road after a meal ? What exactly happened ?
Each of us, the drivers, knows what it is to feel sleepy on the road after eating. Each of us knows, that it can cause [microsleeps], with possible fatal consequences. But not only microsleeps can cause an accident. While being dizzy, your reaction time goes down and braking too late is not safe at all.
So I've asked my girlfriend, a medical doctor, what exactly happens in our bodies through this time. Is the claim "all the blood from the brain goes to stomach" a myth or true ? Why is it happening and how we can prevent ? We asked also two more doctors we know, an internist and a specialist in methabolism and consulted some books.
It is a quite complicated process, so the following lines are a version as simplified as possible.
There are two main reasons for feeling dizzy : hypoglycaemia, (the lack of carbs, sacharides) and hypotension (low blood pressure).
Postprandial hypoglycaemia (lack of carbohydrates after a meal)
The most essential things from which we gather energy are sacharides (carbs, sugars). The mechanism how we gather energy is, that our body creates insuline which converts sacharides in our cells to energy.
There are two types of sacharides : the "fast" monosacharides (the simpler ones) and the "slow" polysacharides (merged monosacharides).
The "fast" monosacharides are causing a fast insuline reaction. All carbs are are fast digested, converted into energy, just a fraction stays in the blood, so the body asks for more carbs. If it doesn't get it, the consequence is fast drop of sugar level, we get hypoglycaemic, get hungry and important for our context - sleepy.
You can get into a deadlock - a "sugar shot" causes fast insuline reaction, lots of new but short energy, than sugar level drop and sleepiness. Than you fulill your monosacharide demand and the process repeats itself.
In contrast the "slow" polysacharides are digested slower and the whole process is less intensive as you don't get an intense insuline shot. The sugar level in the blood drops slower, we get sleepy later as well as the body requires more sugar later.
This is whay all advises says not eating food containing sugar - "fast" monosacharides such as sweets, ice cream, chocolate, sweet drinks etc. Instead they recommend eating food with "slow" sacharides, such as whole grain food like whole grain bread, rice, noodles, pastries. For drinking is recommended just water.
How to find out what to eat ? The Glycemic Index (GI), known to people with diabetes or overweight, tells more. Recommended is food with low or middle GI. You can find which food it is exactly in this table or also this one.
Postprandial hypotension (low blood pressure after meal)
is the second cause for feeling dizzy after a meal. The Harvard Health Publications as well as PubMed.gov, a very trusted source, are saying, that when you eat, your digestive system needs more blood, rerouted from other parts. But in some people this mechanism doesn't work as it should, so the blood pressure drops. The result is dizziness.
So how to prevent this ? Drink water before meal. The meal shouldn't be too large. Fewer rapidly digested carbs, as described sooner. The bottom of the blood pressure drop is 30 to 60 minutes. Let drive someone else through that time or make a break.
If some of the readers can add valuable information to this, feel free to do it in the comments section.
Have a good ride.

Sand or not Sand (top) ?
The wast majority of the convertible soft top roofs are dark. Black, dark green, dark blue etc. It has practical reasons of course, the dust and dirt is less to see so it requires less maintenance.
But sometimes there are brighter coloured options, quite rare, but they are. Saab offered them, I've seen it on the classic 900 convertible but the most known is the Sand top (beige color) on the 9-3 II.
The official and most known photo is this :
Nice, isn't it ? Rare as well, it's a niche in a niche.
But is it really that hard to maintain it to be clean ? That is a question to be asked the owner.
I've met such an owner completely by coincidence at IntSaab 2012 in Spa. Through the day, the convertible roofs were mostly down and invisible. But in the evening while coming back from the "Le Grande Soirée" i've seen it. Stopped to talk. Alexandros, the owner and driver, knew my blog, he even sent a picture to the "World map of Saabs" couple of days ago.
So I've asked him to speak about the Sand top, to make a reality check for the owners, especially those, who dream about it, but fear about the practical side of it.
Could you please introduce your Saab ?
It's a MY 2007 9-3 Convertible with a 2.0T engine, Vector edition. I bought it back in January 2007.
Was the sandtop your original idea or you just came across and liked it ?
I've chosen Nocturne Blue as the car's colour. Blue is one of my favourite colours anyway. I couldn't imagine the car with a black or blue top. If I recall corectly, Sand wasn't actualy an option in the configurator. It was all in my imagination.
Saabism note : the Sand, called Beige, was an option in the pricelists, at least the german ones. There is a list of older german pricelists, look for "Faltverdeck in Beige".
How often do you drive it and in which conditions / part of the year ?
It's actually (as every Saab Convertible!) a car for the whole year, also during the Bavarian winter. As we live in the countryside, my wife and I often need two cars. I drive about 15.000 km per year with the convertible. Our other car is of course a Saab (MY2008 9-5 2.0t SportCombi, Linear).
So how's with the dust and dirt on it ? Too much ? Too often or not really ?
Well, you don't see really the dust on it. What you see is the dark dirt of the road (exhaust gases etc.), some bird's doodoo and the imprints of the top's booth.
How often do you clean it ?
I wash the top about 3-4 times every year: the first time after the winter, I confess, I go to the carwash, where I choose the special convertible programm. I have spoken to many people and the majority of them thinks that carwash is not a problem for modern convertibles. After that I impregnate the top. The other times I wash it per hand with special detergents.
What do you use for cleaning ?
I am using Sonax products for cleaning and impregnation.
As a sand top owner you probably know more of them. How many sand top owners did you met or know about ?
To be honest, I have seen only 2 to 3 Saab Convertibles with a Sand top until now and of course some more from other brands. It seems that many convertible buyers are very hesitant towards buying Sand tops and I think this is a pity because some convertibles would look amazing with a Sand top !
Anything to add ?
A dirty car can always be cleaned and look beautiful again. A "boring" car can't...
... which is an absolute true remark and a great finish of the talk.
Thank you very much Alexandros for taking a time to write the answers.
